SAN ANTONIO, ALAMO HEIGHTS,CORPUS CHRISTI, NEW BRAUNFELS, SCHERTZ, SEGUIN,  TEXAS

Located in the southwestern corner in the area known as the Texas Triangle, San Antonio, Texas, earned its name from the Spanish to honor the feast of the Roman Catholic Saint Anthony of Padua (June 13).

San Antonio, Texas, has existed under six flags of independent nations with the story of the Alamo playing a pivotal role in the development of San Antonio. For over 300 years, the story of the Alamo has been told and retold. The Alamo, The Shrine of Texas Liberty, began as the Mission San Francisco de Solano near the Rio Grande River in 1700. One of five Missions built in the San Antonio area, the Spanish missionaries changed locations several times until 1744 when the foundation of the stone mission church was completed. In the turn of the century, the mission, adobe homes and unfinished stone church would soon become a military garrison when Spain mobilized its military in response to the French and American threats. The 100 men in the “Alamo Company” arrived and eventually the Alamo name became common place name for the compound.

Mexico declared its independence from Spain in 1821. The Alamo and its company became responsible to protect the law-abiding men and women who settled in Texas. The Mexican government flamed the revolution in 1830 by attempting to stop the emigrants from the US. San Antonio battled long and hard through two sieges during the Texas Revolution.

On February 23, 1836, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and his large army surrounded the Alamo and raised the red flag. William Barret Travis, leader of the Alamo, and wrote furiously his “Victory of Death” letters alarming the Alamo was under siege. What Travis and legendary James Bowie and Davy Crockett did not know was that Texas had declared independence. On March 6, 1836, the determined 200 Alamo soldiers (ranging in age 16- to 75) along with the women and children inside the Alamo, prepared themselves for the final battle. The siege lasted about 90 minutes. In tribute to the Alamo soldiers who valiantly fought for Texas, Sam Houston roused his troop and initiated a surprise attack Houston successfully defeated the Mexican troops by capturing Santa Anna with the sentimental battle cry of “Remember the Alamo”.

Centrally located and vital to Texas, San Antonio has emerged into a historic location resplendent with commercial development and entertainment.
